Ya know,...Canada is great at a lot of things...growing superior hockey players, making delicious maple syrup and raising some of the most polite people on the planet. But the one thing that Canada is truly great at....better than any other nation, is creating and preserving incredible outdoor wonders with abundant natural beauty!
And to prove it, a Canadian masterpiece lies just 30 kilometers west, Algonquin Park! It was established way back in 1893, and is Canada's oldest provincial park! Over 2,400 lakes and 1,200 kilometres of streams and rivers are located within the park.
The park contains different types of forests and ecosystems, which allow it to support many different plant and animal species. Oh, one more small thing.. it's huge! It runs all the way to Ottawa River and there are over 1,300 campsites! Algonquin is home to a Natural Heritage Education program. The most popular aspect of the program are the weekly wolf howls.
These are held (weather and wolves permitting) select days throughout the summer. Park staff try to locate a wolf pack the day before and, if successful, they announce a public wolf howl for the next day. Wolves are unique animals, what interesting fact is true about a mating pair of wolves!?
