Take a look up, way up! When you see the sign that says "Artspace", you're looking at the right building!
Inside this renovated warehouse, which is known as the Gault Building, is a veritable treasure trove of Winnipeg artists. Studios and gallery spaces make up the bulk of the upper levels of Artspace, mixed with office space for arts nonprofits. One of Artspace's oldest tenants is the Winnipeg Film Group, WFG - which moved into the building not long after renovations were complete in 1986.
The WFG was founded in 1974, with a mandate to promote and discuss independent Canadian films. Cinematheque, the WFP's independent movie theatre opened in 1982, and now operates out of the main floor of Artspace. It is currently Winnipeg's only independent theatre and shows a wide variety of films - from vintage cartoon marathons, shown with cereal, National Film Board Documentaries, and locally produced films.
Alright, now that we have seen where Winnipeg makes it's films, let's head on to the next stop for a different kind of art form.
