Audio Excerpt
Take a look to the North… pretty imposing mountain isn’t it!? You’re looking at Castle Mountain, named in 1885 by James Hector as he noted that.... “It looks like a gigantic castle”. Did you know that Castle Mountain doubles as a time machine!? That’s right, all you have to do is climb it and you’ll go back in time! You see, Castle Mountain actually sits on the Castle Mountain Fault, which has thrust older sedimentary and metamorphic rocks forming the upper part of the mountain over the younger rocks that make up it’s base. So the higher you climb it, the older the rocks get… kind of like travelling back in time.. Right? Right!? Well if it works, and you end up in the late 1800’s, you might just stumble upon a thriving city! Over 3,000 people lived here in a mining town called Silver City, but lack of profits forced the mine, and subsequently the town, to close down. From 1946 to 1979 Castle Mountain was known as something else, a name that honoured a World War II general… any idea what it was called? Was it,
-
Mount Custard,
-
Mount Patton, or
-
Mount Eisenhower?
If you answered C, Mount Eisenhower, you're right! Now everyone else drop and give me 20! Although the name was switched back in 1979, a pinnacle on the South Eastern side was named Eisenhower Tower to honour the old name. Soooo looking at the mountain.. Think you can get to the top? Looks prettttttty difficult I would say, well it is.. But luckily the peak can be ascended from the backside, on the North Eastern slopes… so what are we waiting for!? Let’s go back in time!
