Audio Transcript

As you can see, the first Baptist church, located just south of Victoria park, is pretty darn big!

The church is one of the earliest Baptist congregations to be formed in the province, which was actually the northwest territories at the time. The congregation was organized in 1991, with a membership of just 15 people. The first church was built 2 months later, but due to strong growth in membership the church you see here was built in 1911.

First Baptist Church shares the distinction with Westminster United church as being one of only two classically inspired churches in the city. It was severely damaged by a tornado in 1912, but was was repaired with a largely similar design, retaining its monumental portico, pedimented gables and reconstructed dome. The interior is quite large and has seating capacity for 1000 people.

The church also contributes to the prominent and historic streetscape that borders Victoria park, making it a major focal point within the city.
