So how long do you think it would take to travel way back in time to the 1870’s?? Well only about 25 minutes actually!! A short drive South to Fort Walsh will alter the space time continuum and bring us us way back to the 1870s! And the best part? No Delorean needed! Here you can experience first hand what Frontier life was like, hear the rough and rugged stories of the whiskey runners and even learn how to make traditional crafts and be a tradesmen!
One of the many things you can learn about at Fort Walsh is Canada’s part in the aftermath of the Battle of Littlehorn. This battle took place in June of 1876, and was a clash between the Lakota, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapho tribes and the 7th Cavalry Regiment of the United States Army. This battle also has a famous nickname! Any idea what it is? Is it,
A) Custer’s Last Chance
B) the Battle of Greasy Grass or
C) Custer’s Last Stand
If you answered C, Custer’s Last Stand.. Give yourself a standing ovation! The Battle of Littlehorn got the nickname Custer’s Last Stand because of the end, when General Custer’s forces took a final defense against the Aboriginal forces on Last Stand Hill. However, the battle is also known as the Battle of Greasy Grass to the Lakota and other Plains tribes so if you guessed that one, give yourself a point as well!
