Audio Excerpt

Welcome to Kananaskis Country!! Home to the Kananaskis River, the area was named by Irish explorer John Palliser after a memorable Cree acquaintance.  Kananaskis Country is located right here in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and is a recreation lovers paradise! 11 provincial parks, 2 ski resorts and countless hiking, biking, horseback riding and cross-country ski trails await adventure seekers just like you!  The Kananaskis River is famous for it’s whitewater rafting and features some of the craziest rapids around! The river's largest wave is called ‘Santa Claus’ and is formed by a river ‘hole’ which refers to water running over a big rock that creates a never-ending wave. The Santa Claus wave is so big.. Just like santa..  and powerful you can actually surf on it! 30 yards after Santa Claus, well there’s an equally fun section called ‘Santa’s Little Helper’! Well.. that is if you make it that far.. The very first rapid on the Kananaskis is a class III drop called…  the ‘Widow Maker’.... Well as long as you're not married you should be fine! Right!?  Another popular activity in the area is scrambling … I’m scrambling to figure out what that means sooo think you can help? So scrambling is,

  1. A short race over very rocky terrain,

  2. A walk up steep terrain using your hands, or,

  3. A fun event where contestants scramble to set up their tent and start a fire as fast as possible?

If you answered B, a walk up steep terrain using your hands, well I guess I was the only one scrambling for that answer! Scrambling is kind of like a mix between hiking, hill walking, mountaineering and rock climbing!
