Audio Excerpt
A quick 200 meter walk North of here, up Leacock lane, will take you to the Stephen Leacock National Historic Site. For over fifty years the Leacock Museum has been welcoming visitors to the Old Brewery Bay, on the shores of Lake Couchiching.
This stately, 19-room summer home represents Stephen Leacock’s lifetime love affair with Orillia. To say he liked Orillia would be an understatement, he immortalized the town as the mythical Mariposa, in his quintessential best-selling book, Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town.
Included in the nearly 10- acre site are Leacock House, the Boathouse, and the museum archives and administration building. You can also stop by the Leacock Cafe, and enjoy some amazing food and beverages, including delicious ice cream!
I'm going to hand it over to Stephen himself to describe why he built the beautiful home.
"When I build my house, I shall make it very plain but at the same time very large... It will become a charming English place. I'm tired of cities and people. It's a case of Goodbye, proud world, I'm going home. "
I hear ya Stevie, I hear ya.
