Welcome to Moose Beach! I'm going to tell you a bit about how it came to be the popular swimming spot it is today, and how it got it's name. Despite popular folklore, it's name has nothing to do with a moose on the loose in Orillia!

From the time period of 1947 to 1950, a group of volunteers from the Orillia Moose Lodge including lodge members, and their family members, came together to build a beach for all Orillian's to enjoy.

All members of the 1217 lodge worked together to clear an area of bush, hauled in truckloads of beach sand and raked the area until a nice, sandy beach area was formed. The members and their families built a change house and canteen for public use.

The area was named "Moose Beach", and the name still stands today. So the name came from the local Moose Lodge 1217, but who knows how THEY got their name. Maybe it did have something to do with a moose on the loose after all!
