We’re about 15 minutes North of ….. Old Wives Lake (said like a creepy old woman)… Old Wives Lake eh? Sounds like a ghost story isn’t far behind… aaaaaand it isn’t. The tale goes like this.. It was a dark and stormy night many many years ago.

 

Around 1840, a band of Cree hunters followed a herd of bison somewhere they shouldn’t have.. Into Blackfoot territory.  Scouts from the enemy tribe found them camped near the lake and attacked. The Cree successfully fought them off, but feared an attack by a larger group the next morning.  They came up with the perfect escape plan.. they would leave the old women tending fires at the camp and escape into the night, unbeknownst to the Blackfoot. But what about the women?  Well the Cree assumed the Blackfoot would not harm a sweet group of old, innocent women…

 

 I won’t go into details about what happened next, but according to some First Nations traditions…. if you go to the lake at night, (start getting progressively quieter) and be really…  really quiet.. you can still hear the voices of the Old Wives... SCREAMING for mercy...

There are actually a few other endings to the story that have been passed down,  which one of the following do you think is fake? Is it,

 

A ) The Blackfoot made the Old Wives, New Wives...Blackfoot wives

B) the old wives tried to escape by swimming away, but drowned in the lake or C) The Blackfoot were so impressed with the old wives courage, they let them live?

The answer is A, the Blackfoot taking the old wives and making them new wives is 100% fake news!
