This is the police! Pull your vehicle over to the side right meow!! Whoa whoa it’s ok, don’t actually do it, it’s just me. I know I sounded REALLY convincing though right?! You should probably watch your speed though, as Regina is home to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Depot Division.
This division has been training new policing recruits, knows as cadets since 1885! It takes 24 weeks for a new recruit from the time they enter the 'Depot' to the time they graduate. Sounds pretty easy to me.. I mean I’ve seen Police Academy and Super Troopers… soooo ya I can do that!
Cadets haven't always been the only ones being trained at the Depot though! The iconic mountie horses used by the RCMP used to train at the Depot as well! They needed to pass certain requirements, and weren’t even accepted unless they were a certain height!
So how do you think a horse's height is measured? Is it,
A. Using a tape measure or ruler
B. In a pool of water using body weight displacement or
C. Putting one hand on top of the other and counting
Again, horses are measured by a) tape measure or ruler, b) displacement or c) hands?
The Answer is C! Horses are measured using hands and needed to be over 16.3 hands to qualify for police work!
