Take a look to the west folks and you’ll see a volcano! Ok well it’s a pretty small volcano… aaaaactually it looks just like a regular ol outcrop of rocks.. But it’s volcanic rocks from the Pleistocene age! The Watts Point volcanic centre is a small outcrop of volcanic rocks in the Southernmost volcanic zone, within the…. PAAAUUUUSSEEE.. Alright so ths question is kind of like one of those Russian dolls.  You know when you open up the big one theres a smaller one inside, and inside that a smaller one.. and inside that a smaller one until your holding a fingernail sized doll?  This is a bit like that! Ok so… GAAAAME OOONN! 

 

So the Watts Point Volcanic Centre is the southernmost volcanic zone in the Squamish Volcanic field, which is only 3km’s long and we’re driving through right now. It’s basically the super tiny Russian doll that fits inside all the others. The Squamish Volcanic field forms the southernmost end of the Garibaldi Volcanic Belt, which extends from here to the Ha-Iltzuk Icefield in the North.  The Garibaldi Volcanic Belt forms the Northernmost segment of the Cascade Volcanic Arc which goes from Southwestern BC all the way down to Northern California. Finally, we come to the biggest doll of them all! What do you think it is? Is it, 

 

A) The Rocky Mountains, B) The Swiss Alps or, C) The Coast Mountains?

 

The answer is C, the Coast Mountains! They extend from Southwestern Yukon down the entire coast to the Fraser River.  I guess it’s true what they say, the West Coast is the best coast!
