Audio Transcript:
Built in 1903, the Land Titles Building you see here is still in use today. But let's take a step back to 1670 for a minute to understand its records keeping a little better.
The Hudson's Bay Company owned Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. They were a royal gift to the company from the crown, in exchange for developing the territories. Hudson’s Bay Co. had little interest in what land belonged to who, though. So, if you’re looking for the names of early settlers or homesteaders between 1670 and the 1800’s, you’ll likely be able to trace your genealogy, but land ownership wasn’t recorded until 1870, when jurisdiction was transferred to the Dominion of Canada.
Let's turn the corner now onto Broadway. Our next stop might surprise you!
